I knew that the Psalms were actually melodies. Too bad they didn't have music notation in those days. It wasn't until the Roman Catholic Church came around with Pope Gregory. I would love to hear the melodies David sung and played his harp to the Psalms' text.

My favorite song depends on where I am at emotionally and spiritually. After my diagnosis in 2002 I came to love the song "Trading my Sorrows". I felt every word of the song...the good and the bad:

I'm trading my sorrow
I'm trading my shame
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

I'm trading my sickness
I'm trading my pain
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord....

Today I love the Matt Brouwer song "I Shall Believe". Life is not always easy or how you think it should be but God doesn't give up on us...even when we give up on ourselves...and maybe even let disappointment lead to giving up on him temporarily:

That not everything is gonna be
The way you think it ought to be
It seems like everytime I try and make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly You won’t give up on me
And I shall believe

Open the door
And show me Your face tonight
I know it’s true
No one heals me like You
And You hold the key

My favorite psalm is Psalm 139. Some verses I hold on to always:

verse 8...If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

verses 13-14...For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

When I read Psalm 23 I am reminded of a strong and compassionate God who is with me despite my circustances.
